Thanks for reading, Ashley. I’m glad you can relate. I’ve come to realise that ‘artist’ encompasses such a wide range of people who create something from nothing—or even transform something that already exists. I now draw a lot of inspiration from writers, whereas before, I didn’t see it as relevant. But in the end, we’re all trying to break free from uninspiring day jobs and figure out how to do what we love while getting paid for it!
I completely understand the struggle with errands—it’s so easy to get caught up in them because there’s a sense of satisfaction in ticking things off the list. That’s why I need to be really careful not to let anything distract me from my painting that week.
“I will figure out how to create a bubble around me.” Yes, that’s exactly it! We need to protect that space for our most important work.
Let me know how you get on with the mentor request!
I believe in you!!!
oh, p.s. any tips on PR stuff would be soooo welcomed and gratefully received.
I'm listening to Rick Rubin's book on creativity right now and there are many overlaps with what you say, "that the 'artist' encompasses such a wide range of people who create something from nothing—or even transform something that already exists." Love this working definition.
The mentor request is pending...for now, I'll keep tagging them in my articles! :)
With PR tips, I can send you a rough template...and you could feed it to chat gpt along with a backgrounder of your upcoming show (all the details), your bio, your key message about your show/work (used in the quote from you), and plug it all into a draft. Or you can DM this to me and I can create a rough draft. Happy to!
Other tips, now a days, you can post your press release to your website (and probably substack) and then post that link to Bluesky, Twitter, facebook, Substack notes, Linked-IN AND tag journalists and organizations, who you want to see it. Twitter used to be a great place for this but I don't know if it is anymore. AND also, email it to the organizations you want to see it - and copy and paste the whole PR into the email, as well as include a photo of you and your work. Also, attach a PDF version to the email.
That is what I used to do. No, pressure on any of this! I just figured I'd share the knowledge. Good luck with it all!
