Each Wednesday I ask a different artist the same three questions.
This week’s artist is super cool, I came across her work through one of Brainard Carey’s books. I love her style, it’s edgy, fun, colourful, bold and often figurative (I love figurative art).
1. What first sparked your interest in creating art?
I’d always been encouraged by my family to draw from a very young age. It was actually the only thing I would ever get for Christmas was art supplies. Well,--and a Macy Gray Barbie.
The Little Mermaid truly developed my skills in figurative works her anatomy scenario [fins to legs] fascinated me and I loved to stylize her clam bikini top and the fin.
I would say I found my style when I was introduced to Mortal Kombat. I really love the badass women in the movie and when playing Sega Genius.
I would get paid at lunch in middle school to draw by my male classmates to draw these really hot, big boobed—ninja chicks.
2. What are your regrets?
Putting my journey second to other artists I admired. I had a habit for a while: giving others opportunities. I should’ve kept them for myself. Recycle that shit! Take notes. No regrets. No more.
3. What wisdom would you offer someone beginning their art career, or exploring art for the first time at any stage in life?

Try everything. Volunteer and give service in the field/medium you want to succeed in. You will find mentors, competitors, and new inspiration. All these things will help you greatly in your journey.
Check out Ramona Lee on Instagram. You will not be disappointed. I was a fan of Mortal Kombat too, Ramona! But definately more of a Street Fighter 2 fan!
…or if you’d rather. Please share this post with a friend.
I loved hearing how Ramona made money in middle school, it cracked me up. And her advice about volunteering bringing us mentors. And using those opportunities we find for ourselves! Thanks, SLART, I love how you found Ramona and that you interviewed her! Brainard Carey looks really interesting, too.
