Each Wednesday, I ask a different artist the same three questions.
This week's featured artist is Barnzy, I came across his work on Instagram, and I have become a fan ever since (I bought a print).
1. What first sparked your interest in creating art?
I've been making art for as long as I can remember. I started drawing from a very early age and was completely engrossed in it. I also thought everyone could draw, like it was something that everyone did, like walking or having dinner! So, guess the creative spark has always been with me, it's just whether or not I choose to pay attention to it, like it's always at the back of my mind, reminding me I need to get things started or finished.
2. What are your regrets?
I'm not sure if I have any regrets, maybe If I knew I was going to walk out of my job in 2014 to really dedicate myself to art, I would've probably saved some money before I 'leaped' instead of just winging it. I guess if I think about it, years ago I threw some prints away that turned out to be very valuable, but that's another story!
3. What wisdom would you offer someone beginning their art career, or exploring art for the first time at any stage in life?
I'd say mainly follow your instinct, even if it doesn't work out, because you need to be comfortable with your decisions, you need to get into the habit of trusting your instincts and the voice in your head. Also go and look at art in the real world, see why something or someone is successful, I think we're all guilty of looking art on our devices, art is still a social event so go out and meet people, that's still where the real stuff happens, emails and messages get lost with all the other noise. I'd also say to spend time finding out why someone made something, what the thought process was, especially with work you don't like or understand, because in the long run it will give a better understanding of the art world overall.
