New here? What’s this Weekly Art Practice all about?
Well, let me tell you… Every Saturday, I share my art practice over the past 7 days. I'm fascinated by artistic practice – it's not just about creating art but the entire process. From influences and ideas to materials and skills, each artist's unique approach shapes their work, making it more than a finished piece. Just imagine having a weekly update from your favourite living artist. How cool would that be?

Cream of the Crop hits 300 Subscribers
A big thank you to the 300 subscribers to my writing! As you can see, it’s been super steady since the start, in July 2023!
🐢 I’m an art turtle, plodding along, doing the thing, having the power, but ever so slowwwly. It’s all good though, I’m enjoying myself. Without sounding like a pillock “It’s about the journey, not the destination”.
However, I do find myself getting a case of the ‘comparing to others’ quite often. “I started my Substack 8 weeks ago and I have 10k subscribers, this is how I did it” oh do shut up 🤫 😂
So remember this true quote
“Comparison is the thief of joy”
Read it again until you remember it.
It’s so true though isn’t it? If you’re comparing to yourself to someone else, you certainly don’t feel joy!
SLART ZINE - COMING IN 2025
Dear
, you inspired me to create my own Zine. What it’ll contain I do not know as yet, but you’ll be first to know! is also a big Zine creator don’t you know?Insight of the week 💡
You need rest. Winter is the winding-down season. I don’t know about you but I have trouble winding things down with my art career, as I enjoy it so much and it doesn’t feel like work! That said, I do need some proper rest and so do you.
This week, I sold my soul (again) for £0.99 minus eBay fees this week
I lost £1 on this one, but let’s spread the joy regardless! What’s one quid to spread the pleasure of selling my soul?
Memento vivere at the Crypt Gallery progress report
This week: I got my first donation towards the exhibit. I’m over the moon. I can’t say too much about the person, but I’d like to share this lovely card they sent with a $1000 donation via cheque from the US of A! Thank you so so so much!
Such a sweet message. It’s given me a huge boost!
I’ve added more art to Etsy for you to purchase, enjoy and gift to others
Slow and steady, I’ll add more prints for you to enjoy on a weekly basis :-)

Reeeee-jected from Hayama Artist Residency for the 4th time
Here’s the letter I received:
Dear Steve,
Thank you for taking the time to apply for our June 2025 Hayama Artist Residency. We know how much effort and care go into preparing an application, and we truly appreciate the thoughtfulness and dedication you invested in presenting your artistic vision.
Our selection process is taken very seriously. Each application is reviewed carefully by our committee, and we were genuinely impressed by the quality of work submitted this year. The number of outstanding proposals we received made our decision-making process extremely difficult. Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that we were not able to select your application for the upcoming June 2025 residency.
Please know that this decision in no way reflects the value we see in your work. We respect you, and believe that your contributions to the creative community are significant. We strongly encourage you to consider applying for our June 2026 residency. As a gesture of appreciation for your continued interest, we will gladly waive the application fee for your second submission.
The application for our June 2026 residency will open early next year. We will announce the opening on our website, in our newsletter, and on our Instagram account. Additionally, we will email you a direct link to the upcoming application as soon as it becomes available.
Thank you once again for sharing your work with us. We look forward to reviewing your future application and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you to the Hayama Artist Residency in the near future.
Warm regards,
Dexter WimberlyFounder and Director,
Hayama Artist Residency
Of course, it’s not a rejection, it’s just not the right time. I shall keep on applying until my dying day.
That’s all for now.
Do the thing and you will have the power.
Best wishes and deep blessings,
SLART.
Oh, remember to read my last post below if you missed it.
Do the thing and you will have the power.
Gosh, SLART, you are such a very fast turtle, you make my head spin! Even in Winter, with resting. I had to look "pillock", a great term! (Bet you don't know its origin! https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/pillock scroll down to the Scandinavian origin.) I am sorry about the Hayama residency; keeping doing the thing is building your power. CONGRATUFECKINGLATIONS about the $1000 gift!
